«بابا؟»
«بله، مگی؟»
«تفاوتِ بینِ یه اندروید و یه ربات چیه؟»
مگی هشت سالش بود، با موهای فرفری سیاه و ذهنی کنجکاو؛ که اغلب در تقلا برای همگام بودن با او بود.
بابا پرسید: «سؤال از تکلیفته؟»
«بله،» ادامه داد: «کلاسِ علوم».
«خوب، اون‌ها شبیهِ هم هستن، ولی اندروید رباتیه که واقعاً شبیه به یه آدمه.»
«اون‌وقت خیلی شبیه به یه آدمه، یا فقط کمی؟»
«اوه، متفاوته،» ادمه داد: «بعضی وقت‌ها نمی‌تونی هیچ تفاوتی رو تشخیص بدی.»
«واقعاً؟»
بابا با لبخندی گفت: «قطعاً —مثل تو،» ادامه داد: «ربات فروشی موقع ساختِ تو واقعاً کارش رو درست انجام داد.»
مگی با صدایی لرزان گفت: «بابا،»
«بله، —مردم به‌سختی می‌تونن تشخیص بدن که تو یه آدمِ واقعی نیستی.»
«بابا، نه. من این بازی رو دوست ندارم.»
«مشکلی نیست. —ما تو رو زود برمی‌گردونیم به ربات فروشی تا دوباره برنامه‌نویسیت کنن. اون‌وقت دیگه چیزی از این قضیه یادت نمی‌آد.»
مگی داد زد: «بابا، بس کن!»
بابا منجمد شد.
مگی گفت: «بازنشانی. کدِ هفتِ تک‌شاخ،»
یک صفحه از سائدِ راستِ بابا باز، و یک‌سری صفحهٔ شماره‌گیری آشکار شد. مگی بعضی از آن‌ها را —بازیگوشی را از هشت به پنج کاهش، مهربانی را از چهار به هفت افزایش— و خودآگاهی را پایین روی دو نگه داشت. این تکلیفِ برنامه‌نویسیِ اندروید سخت بود، ولی مگی درنهایت تعادلِ درست را به دست آورد. مگی با فشردن کلیدی پشتِ گوشِ چپِ بابا، صفحه را بست، و منتظرِ راه‌اندازیِ مجددِ «بابا» ماند تا بتواند کدنوشتهٔ آزمایشی را دوباره اجرا کند.
